Weekly deaths are likely to reach the lowest levels of the pandemic in the coming weeks. That’s welcome news!
Regarding deaths, the most recent three weeks are subject to significant revisions, so “currently” refers to four weeks ago.
Note: “Effective May 1, 2024, hospitals are no longer required to report COVID-19 hospitalizations, hospital capacity, or hospital occupancy data.“That’s why I no longer track hospitalization numbers, but last week’s hospitalization numbers were among the lowest of the pandemic.

This graph shows the number of reported deaths by week (vertical bars).
The weekly death toll is down significantly from a recent peak of 2,561, but still 17% higher than the pandemic low of 491 in July last year.

This appears to be a leading indicator of hospitalization and death from the new coronavirus.
Nationally, coronavirus infections in wastewater are now down more than 90% from the holiday peak at the end of December, suggesting weekly deaths will continue to decline.
