To mark World Environment Day, Sirru Fen Fushi Private Lagoon Resort has teamed up with Munavara School on nearby Marosi island to promote environmental awareness and sustainability.
Under the theme “50 Students – 50 Trees”, the resort’s sustainability team engaged students from grades 6, 7, 8 and 9 in an educational, hands-on tree planting activity, working together to get their shovels in hand. The event highlighted important environmental issues such as the fragility of the Maldives’ ecosystem, the impact of marine plastics, the importance of recycling and the aspect of turtle conservation through support of the Olive Ridley Project.
The team at Sirru Fen Fushi is proud to educate guests on the technical aspects of plastic recycling by introducing them to step-by-step guidance from Sirru Fen Fushi’s Resort Sustainability Lab. This facility cleans, shreds and moulds post-consumer plastic waste into new useful objects such as chairs, tables, clipboards, as well as turtle-shaped souvenirs and bracelets. In this way, the resort is making a significant contribution towards reducing plastic waste and ocean plastic.
To demonstrate its commitment to a sustainable future, the resort botanical gardens at Sirru Fen Fushi donated 50 trees for students to plant in their schoolyards as part of a group activity. The 50 trees for 50 students initiative was a huge success, contributing to the education of local island students, who were enthusiastic to learn about the planting process and tree propagation. Tied to Marosi’s rich cultural history, the tree planting initiative was inspired by the oldest tree in the Maldives, a 490-year-old tree located in the heart of the island.
To further support the reduction of single-use plastics, the Sirru Fen Fushi team is providing each student with a foldable, reusable water bottle, fostering a culture of sustainability and environmental stewardship among Marosi’s younger generation.
Sirru Fen Fushi – Private Lagoon Resort would like to express its sincere gratitude to Munavara School for their enthusiastic participation and support in the meaningful celebration of World Environment Day.
