Former US President Ronald Reagan popularised the phrase “trust but verify” during the Cold War, and similar logic applies to the active fight against the growing epidemic of glyphosate-resistant kochia.
It’s safe to assume that kochia in many parts of Western Canada is resistant to glyphosate, but it’s still worth testing, said Ian Epp, agronomy specialist for central/northern Saskatchewan with the Canola Council of Canada.
“Testing is still a great option, but I think in most parts of Western Canada, testing is available wherever you are,” he said.
In this episode of Canola School, Epp joins Kelvin Heppner of RealAgriculture to discuss what to look for when scouting after applying herbicides to your crops, how to submit samples for lab confirmation, and how to reduce risk and even “reset” fields with glyphosate-resistant kochia (keep in mind that kochia seeds are abundant but only viable for two to three years).
