In a collaboration that merges the worlds of art and Bitcoin, acclaimed impact artist Marco Santini recently contributed his creativity to Bitcoin Magazine and Bitcoin Conference. His involvement began with creating a piece for the first issue of Bitcoin Magazine. Illumination: Bitcoin Magazine Issue 1 (look here) was famously purchased by Emily Bailey at a Sotheby’s auction and is now proudly displayed at the Bitcoin Museum in Nashville, Tennessee. This iconic piece features key elements that summarise key moments in Bitcoin’s history as published in the magazine itself.
For the 2024 Bitcoin Conference, Santini took the initiative a step further by creating a live mural and collaborative activation. The vibrant piece, now also on display at the Bitcoin Museum, aims to bring together the diverse voices of attendees who answered the profound question, “What does Bitcoin mean to you?” A notable answer came from David Bailey, CEO of BTC Inc, who said, “You know, there are all kinds of answers, like the mundane and cliché ‘hope,’ but I say ‘prosperity.’ Because Bitcoin goes beyond hope, you need all the things that Bitcoin brings to give to your life – fulfillment that goes beyond the monetary element. If you’re full of hope and possibility and excited about the future, you’ll thrive.”
Tony Sakic had the opportunity to interview Santini to learn more about his conference experience and the nature of the mural.

Tony: So you’ve been doing this all day? How do you respond to people who say things to you or approach you and ask you to write? What was your experience at the conference?
Marco: Yes. My name is Marco Santini. I’m an impact artist. You could say I travel the world reflecting the spirit of community through interactive collaborative art. At the Bitcoin conference this weekend, I asked people, “What does Bitcoin mean to you?” Without prejudice or fear, I listened to everyone from all different walks of life and tried to really understand what they were thinking.
We compiled over 250 unique responses into this mural, which features some really bright colors and positive messages. We believe that being surrounded by bright colors and lots of positive messages can help with your mental health, improve your mood, and overall make you feel more connected to your community.
Tony: What are some interesting takeaways from the responses you received?
Marco: Specifically, there were some interesting takeaways. The overwhelming answer was “freedom.” Many spoke about being able to own their own money, with no middleman, fear and distrust of the banking system, etc. The second most common answer was the idea of community. People feel part of their family and that their friends are here. They look forward to interacting with each other and meeting people in person. It was really interesting to hear how people connect, find friends, and meet people here. Despite wearing Bitcoin logos from head to toe, when you ask them “What does Bitcoin mean?” they stop and think seriously, which often leads to deep and meaningful conversations.
Tony: That’s great. Can I add one more thing?
Marco: What is your words?
Tony: P2P, peer to peer. Bitcoin is for the people, a way for anyone to transact freely, whenever they want. You don’t need someone’s permission to send you something. It’s all about community and trusting the people you’re transacting with.

Santini’s mural is more than just a collection of words; it is a vibrant tapestry capturing the hopes, dreams and realities of the Bitcoin community. The artwork reflects Bitcoin’s decentralized ethos, emphasizing freedom, community and peer-to-peer interaction.
David Bailey’s mural’s emphasis on “prosperity” has resonated deeply with the Bitcoin community, as his perspective highlights the multifaceted nature of Bitcoin as more than just a financial tool, but a beacon of hope and a catalyst for personal and community growth.
Santini’s art reflects the growing and evolving spirit of the Bitcoin community, continuing to inspire and connect people. Now part of the Bitcoin Museum, the mural stands as a testament to the power of collaborative art and the profound impact Bitcoin has had in individual lives. Visitors to the museum can experience first-hand a colorful representation of what Bitcoin means to people from all walks of life, creating a unique and enriching experience that goes beyond a traditional exhibition.
