Eve is here. KLG shares how, as a child in a union home, he encountered the oppressive and arguably immoral operations of capital, which inspired him to write The Bearded Man. Tell us what caused your anger. The publication of a new translation of Marx’s Capital was the impetus for this essay.
KLG’s opening thoughts:
Karl Marx himself was impressed by the achievements of capitalism, which increased total “wealth” by several orders of magnitude compared to before. He was also the first philosopher, historian, and political economist to explain what capitalism is and how it performs its hidden functions. Although he did not foresee the direction in which capitalism would lead us, due to what Andreas Malm described as “fossil capital”, neither the earth nor most of its inhabitants, including humans, It is clear that things are not going well. Considering this trajectory, Marx would not be surprised.
A new translation of Volume 1 of Capital has been published by Princeton University Press. It will revive serious consideration of Marx’s analytical approach to the problems we face in the Anthropocene. What follows is a personal reflection on the importance of this book in modern times. I’m glad I remembered that the title of Chapter 1 is “Products.” Virtually everything important to human life is converted into some kind of commodity by capital. Furthermore, things that are not subject to direct commodification are transformed beyond recognition by financialization in neoliberalism, the final stage of capitalism.
Since 1995, Mr. KLG has held research and academic positions at three U.S. medical schools, where he currently serves as professor of biochemistry and associate dean.
