Luxury hotel and country estate, Matfen Hall, has been awarded the prestigious AA 5-star rating, making it the first and only 5-star hotel in Northumberland.
The luxury country hotel continues to promote its distinctive hospitality brand, having been highly rated in recent inspections and now boasting a coveted 5-star rating.
Grade II listed Matfen Hall has recently undergone a multi-million pound refurbishment which included extensive refurbishment and upgrades to the Great Hall, dining area, bar and bedrooms.
As part of the redevelopment, in addition to significant investment in The Cloisters Restaurant & Bar and state-of-the-art kitchen, the building’s Great Hall has been meticulously restored to its former glory and the interior A new bar with a second floor was built. .
The estate also features a 27-hole championship golf course, spa and fitness suite, with further investment and development planned over the coming months as part of continued improvements by owners Walwick Estate Group .
Now, Matfen Hall has received top honors at a recent visit by AA Hospitality Inspectors, officially recognizing its highest level of quality. This is the closest 5 star hotel to Newcastle.
Inspectors reported: “Matfen Hall is a luxurious, elegant stately home set in 300 acres of beautiful Northumbrian countryside.”
The AA 5-star rating is only awarded to hotels with luxurious accommodation and public areas that greet guests at the hotel entrance. In addition to the highest standards of food and beverage, hotels must also demonstrate a number of additional facilities and multilingual services.

Matfen Hall now joins sister property Chester Stables near Hexham (also owned by Walwick Estate Group) as an AA five-star destination. Chester Stables, a collection of luxury self-catering stable suites, also achieved his five-star rating in the self-catering accommodation category earlier this year.
