For Ingersoll, Ont., dairy farmer Darryl Marcus, it’s all about giving back.
Earlier this month, Canadian Daily XPO (CDX), Marcus and his family, and the entire Canadian dairy industry participated in the “Calf for a Cause” auction to benefit the London Children’s Health Foundation.
Marcus was born with congenital central hypoventilation syndrome (CCHS) and spent his first 120 days in a critical care facility. The auction started four years ago. System failure. Four-year-old Brooks showed off his calf in the ring at an auction held this year live from the Cow Coliseum at the Stratford Rotary Complex Exhibition Center in Stratford, Ont.
The first two Calves for a Cause auctions were held virtually, but in 2023 the auction moved to CDX.
“I was a little tired the first year, but all of a sudden I started getting calls from people who wanted it, so I did it again the second year. We were really looking forward to hosting it here and it really provided us with a great opportunity to showcase the sale even better.”
In 2023, the auction achieved record results, reaching a total of $285,000, with $65,000 donated to London Children’s Hospital. Stratford General Hospital also received a $6,500 donation from him. The final proceeds from the 2024 auction are not yet available.
In this report, Marcus talks about the overwhelming support that Calves for a Cause continues to receive from farmers and breeders across Canada and the dairy industry as a whole.
