Sean Haney predicts that the U.S. Farm Bill is unlikely to pass in 2024, but what does Pro Farmer’s DC policy analyst Jim Wiesemeyer think? .
Wiesemeyer said a lot needs to happen for the bill to pass, but there is some momentum to get it well into the process by June. That said, the Chairman’s marked-up version (listen to the content) is expected in mid-to-late May, and it will be the bill before another baseline (of pricing) is passed in June. Because it means moving forward.
Wiesemeyer said if the increases go ahead, there is a slim chance the bill will be passed by the end of the year. Wiesemeyer said he has seen 11 of the 19 farm bills passed in his career and knows the “normal” path for bills to pass, but that “nothing is normal anymore.” “Not,” he says.
As far as Canada is concerned, he says, look at the initial proposal to potentially double funding for U.S. trade promotion, market access programs and other trade policies.
And what if Trump is elected in November? What happens if Biden is re-elected? That’s a good question, says Wiesemeyer. There are several scenarios to consider for each option.
