The Government of Saskatchewan will provide $13.2 million to the Western Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) in 2024-2025, an increase of $667,000 from last year and five new seats for Saskatchewan students. will be added.
The funding is part of the government’s commitment to subsidize 25 training slots for Saskatchewan students. Five of her seats are designated for students who are likely to work in rural or mixed animal clinics around the state after graduation. This designation encourages graduates to consider careers as veterinarians with an agricultural focus.
WCVM is located on the University of Saskatchewan campus in Saskatoon. Under an interprovincial agreement with the three western provinces, the WCVM accepts a quota number of applicants each year from Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and British Columbia.
“Western Canada needs more veterinarians. With support from the provincial government, USask will help meet that need,” said University of Saskatchewan President Peter Stoicheff. “The increased funding for WCVM by the Government of Saskatchewan is already contributing to an increase in the number of Saskatchewan students studying veterinary medicine. It will improve access.”
Saskatchewan also offers the Saskatchewan Loan Forgiveness Program for veterinarians and veterinary technicians. It forgives up to $20,000 of student loan debt in Saskatchewan for graduates who practice in rural and underserved areas.
