Farmers in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba can assess risk levels for Fusarium head blight (FHB), Fusarium head blight and deoxynivalenol (DON) in spring wheat, winter wheat, barley and durum wheat based on weather conditions You now have access to a new risk mapping tool to help you.
Weather-based risks are calculated using real-time weather data from more than 500 weather stations operated by Environment and Climate Change Canada, the Manitoba AgWeather program, Public Safety Saskatchewan, the Alberta Climate Information System, and Methos Canada . The risk algorithm is “homegrown” based on research data collected from 600 parcel sites across his 15 locations in Western Canada each year from 2019 to 2021, and from more than 300 of his 300-plus plot sites on the Prairies during the same period. Tested in grower fields.
Previous FHB risk maps utilized imported FHB risk algorithms with limited accuracy testing and were unable to assess risk for barley and durum, or for damaged grain and DON . You can access the risk mapping tool using your smartphone, tablet, or desktop computer.available at playleafhb.ca.
The risk map is the result of a three-year research project led by Dr. Paul Block of the University of Manitoba, with partners from Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation, Saskatchewan Agriculture, Manitoba Agriculture, Manitoba Crops Alliance, and Saskatchewan Wheat Development. Created as part of Committee, Saskatchewan Barley Development Board, Alberta Grains.
On RealAg Radio earlier this month, Jeremy Boitin, interim director of research at Alberta Grains, shared his enthusiasm for the new risk mapping tool. He says this will provide him with a consistent risk assessment across the three states. The story continues after the interview.
The project was funded through the Integrated Crops Agriculture Cluster with funding from the Canadian Agricultural Partnership, Agriculture, Agri-Food Canada, Western Grains Research Foundation, MCA, Sask Wheat, Alberta Grains, Brewing and Malting Barley Research Institute and Prairie Oat Growers Association.
