One of the most commonly used tools to combat pests will be missing from the toolbox in many Canadian farm situations as early as 2024.
Ian Epp, an agronomist with the Canadian Canola Council, said there will be no changes to the labels of products containing lambda-cyhalothrin, such as Matador and Silencer, for the 2024 growing season.
Epp also serves as the Council’s representative on maximum residue limits and regulatory matters.
“Unfortunately, we’re back to where we were this time last year, or just before the 2020 growing season, and this is not where we want to be. But on April 29th of last year, we officially The label changes that have been made are still in effect and we have not made any real progress,” he explains. Nanohana school episode.
This means that products containing Lambda-Cy cannot be legally applied to crops that end up as animal feed (including, in most cases, canola).
Epp said pest control plans should be considered, especially if multiple applications are needed throughout the season, as there is a threat of flea beetles after sowing and locusts are expected to become a problem again in late 2024. We recommend that you set it up.
“We know that large parts of the prairie could have a bad grasshopper crop this year,” he says. “We need to know what options we have and be able to export in terms of ‘keep it clean.’ How many times can a product be used, which products should be used as insecticides first? and then follow up if a second application is required.
He says now is the time to strategize how to balance overlapping labels, timing restrictions, and the use of different products that can be threatened by multiple pests.
“The good news is that there are many other products that have similar effects,” Epp said, noting that manufacturers and retailers also had time to adapt to the label changes.
