The U.S. Department of Commerce releases domestic retail sales and e-commerce-only totals every calendar quarter. According to the DoC, e-commerce sales cover “goods and services that are ordered (or for which the price and terms of sale are negotiated) by the buyer via the Internet, mobile devices, extranets, electronic data interchange networks, email, or equivalent online systems; payment may or may not be made online.”
E-commerce accounted for 15.9% of total U.S. retail sales in the first quarter of 2024, up slightly from 15.6% in the previous quarter.
