A dairy worker in Michigan has become the second person to test positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) viruses circulating in U.S. dairy herds. This marks the first human case linked to HPAI infection in the dairy herd. It was detected in Texas in March..
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said symptoms of the infection in both cases were mild and manifested as conjunctivitis.
So far, 51 dairy cows in nine states have tested positive for the virus, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency released an update today, May 23, outlining testing of retail milk samples. No traces of HPAI were found in any of the 303 samples tested from across Canada, the agency said, adding that no cows in Canada are yet infected with the disease.
