Rain certainly helps grains grow, but it also makes the grass greener. Ann Wasco of Gateway Livestock Exchange is excited about this episode of “Beef Market Update” with Sean Haney.
The sight of green grass in many parts of the Prairie Country is a welcome change from recent years, and it’s good to see cow and calf raisers breathing a little sigh of relief, at least for now.
Turning to the market, the physical market rebounded to its highest level since March heading into the US Memorial Day long weekend, but it wasn’t particularly busy. Wasco said part of the calm in the market was down to strong supply ahead of the start of barbecue season.
Speaking of supply, the market is expecting feed intakes to be slightly lower or stable due to lower head counts in April. Steer carcass weights are also up in the U.S., which is bucking seasonal trends but makes economic sense (cheaper margins), Wasco said.
In Canada, farmers are hoping for strong numbers as they are riding the tide more and carcass weights are dropping accordingly. Wasco says the strong base has given farmers some opportunities and right now they are really riding the tide going into June and are in a good position going into the summer slow season.
