Clubroot is a persistent and destructive soil-borne disease of canola that lurks in the soil and waits to be carried to new fields by machinery, boots, wheels or even the wind.
Clubroot was first discovered in canola fields in Alberta more than 20 years ago and is now found in all of the Prairie provinces and several northern US states.
Canadian farmers have adapted crop management practices to account for the disease, and plant breeding has provided some genetic resistance options.
But managing the disease requires more than resistant hybrids and stripping soil from farm equipment, as we learn from our guests, Marissa Robitaille-Balogh of the Canola Council of Canada and Dr. Steven Strelkopf of the University of Alberta.
