Long story short! Peter Johnson has a lot to say in this episode of “What Wheat Pete Says.”
That starts with road safety — be careful when turning, especially when traffic is coming from behind. Planting is nearing the end for many Ontario farmers, with some farmers racing to catch rain while others are lucky to have their crops in the ground and getting timely moisture.
Farmers who planted late are now considering switching to soybeans, but does Ontario need more soybeans? Sticking with short-season corn and maintaining a crop rotation is best, Johnson says. Weed control is also on his mind. Delaying post-emergence weed control in corn can be costly, and there’s research to prove it.

summary
- Please be safe on the roads, as your equipment may cause a dust storm if you move to the shoulder.
- Flashing lights can confuse drivers. Turn off your flashing lights before you turn on your turn signal. Drivers need to be able to see your turn signal.
- Resilient Agricultural Landscapes Program (RALP) applications open June 3
- Funds available for reduced tillage and other management issues. Visit ontariosoilcrop.org.
- I see some roots growing through the tiles – what are they – a tree, a cover crop, or (I don’t even want to think about it…) wheat?
- Check out Turnkey Genomics in Guelph, they’ll tell you what’s out there
- Weather remains unsettled across Ontario, with areas including Glencoe, Strathroy and Drayton experiencing excessive rain.
- Other growers thankful for the timely rains after planting was complete
- Much of Alberta has received six inches of snow this spring and people are celebrating
- There is no fairness in the weather
- Why is the soil not suitable this spring? Maybe it’s the lack of recent hard freezes?
- These freezes also help manage compaction
- Planting is delayed. Stick to corn if you can. No more soybeans needed.
- Maintain crop rotation and protect against SCN, SDS, Phytophthora root rot and Rhizoctonia
- Keep growing corn but switch to shorter day corn, there is excellent 85 day corn available with yields of 200 bushels per acre.
- Rotate, rotate, rotate
- Birds love gravel hills, and we need an innovative way to stop them from eating up the corn we planted. How about planting wheat?
- Controls weeds in corn. Dr. Peter Sikkema says growers lose 1.7 bushels/acre of yield for every weed control delay. $11/day
- The delay in weed control is similar in canola.
- Start Clean, Stay Clean
- Nitrogen in wheat. Poor distribution pattern of nitrogen and sulfur.
- Check out our rental spreaders. It’s time to recycle
- Do you use soybean MAP?
- The population may decline, but phosphorus’ response will outweigh forest loss.
- The hay yield is incredible.
- Stripe rust in wheat. Genetics is key. Susceptible varieties are smoked, others are unaffected.
- I sprayed T3 fungicide. I sprayed it for stripe rust. Do I spray it twice?
- Yes, if there is high weather risk.
