Velana International Airport, the main international gateway of the Maldives, has taken a major step towards cleaning up the environment with the introduction of a new ocean cleaning drone. The initiative, spearheaded by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), was officially launched by CEO and MD Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed and DMD Mohamed Lamuaan and Mujtaba Latif.
This innovative solution has been made possible thanks to a close partnership with State Trading Organisation plc. The drones will be deployed to keep the seaplane base and surrounding lagoon area litter-free, promoting a healthier marine environment for the beautiful Maldivian ecosystem.
Consistently rated for its beauty, Velana International Airport plays a vital role in the Maldives’ tourism industry. The use of ocean cleaning drones offers a unique opportunity to address the growing problem of marine debris while protecting the pristine waters around the airport. These drones offer several advantages over traditional cleaning methods:
- efficiency: Drones can cover large areas quickly and effectively, allowing for more comprehensive cleaning efforts.
- Accuracy: Drones equipped with advanced sensors can target specific areas with greater precision.
- safety: Drones minimise the need for manual cleaning, reducing the risk of exposure to contaminants and hazardous materials.
The implementation of this eco-friendly initiative highlights MACL’s commitment to environmental sustainability. The new ocean cleaning drone is a positive step towards protecting the natural beauty of the Maldives and ensuring a healthy marine environment for future generations.
