welcome Frontline: Geopolitics Impacting Agriculture Join Jacob Shapiro and Shaun Haney from Cognitive Investments!
In this episode of the podcast, Shapiro breaks down the results of this week’s Mexican presidential election.
Shapiro said electing Claudia Scheinbaum as the next president would be an overall positive for the country, but could be a negative for Canadian and American agricultural producers because Mexico’s agricultural policies and their impact on North American trade will take some time to resolve under her leadership.
Scheinbaum, and before him Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO), have won the hearts of Mexicans by going after corruption and addressing wealth inequality, he says. Given her background, it’s important to note that she will take a different approach than AMLO on agricultural self-sufficiency, especially when it comes to staples like corn and wheat. Given her background as a scientist, Shapiro is not sure she will prioritize environmentally friendly policies and sustainability efforts instead of prioritizing a GMO-free white corn policy.
Of course, there will be conflict between Sheinbaum and the United States over immigration and the border, and if Donald Trump is re-elected as US president in November, trade relations between China and Mexico could become even more conflictual.
What does all this mean for North American trade trends? Listen in to find out more.
