Soil testing is a great management practice when planning fertilizer applications, but it will be most valuable after extreme conditions such as very wet or drought conditions.
As Mike Palmier of Max Ag Consulting explains in the Canola School episode below, his area in west-central Saskatchewan has experienced three years of dry or drought conditions, resulting in significant yield losses, but with the rains returning in 2024, many farmers are wondering if there’s a way to increase yields even after the crop is established.
Topdressing is an option, but whether it’s necessary or economical depends on some very important factors: soil testing, growing conditions, timing, etc. Palmier says with canola, the window for topdressing is very short, and missing the timing can result in yield loss if a basic fertility plan isn’t in place at planting.
