Consultations scheduled for June 26th and 27th, 2024 in eastern Ontario on expanding wetlands protections on agricultural land in three watersheds have been abruptly “paused” following petitions and opposition from area residents and landowners.
Earlier this week, several petitions were circulating through social media over concerns that proposed new wetlands designations in three conservation areas – South Nation, Rideau Valley and Raisin Region – go too far and include maple sugar producing areas, existing farmland or former farmland.
A map outlining the proposed expansion area has been removed from the website, replaced with the following message:
“Consultations on updating wetlands maps suspended
This is to let you know that RVCA, SNC, and RRCA are pausing consultations on the wetlands mapping updates. We appreciate the feedback and comments we have received to date and support the direction from the Department of Natural Resources, which has allowed us time to work through our efforts on the ground.
Over the coming months, conservation officials will be working with agency staff, local governments and stakeholders to develop this regional approach. Please note that as a result, open houses and one-on-one meetings with landowners will be suspended and rescheduled at a later date.
CANCELLED – June 26th Open House (RVCA Administrative Office, Manotick)
CANCELLED – June 27th Open House (SNC Administrative Office, Finch).
If you have any questions, please call RVCA staff at 613-692-3571 or 1-800-267-3504, or contact us by email. (email address protected).”
RealAgriculture contacted Conservation Ontario requesting a media interview, but the request was denied due to “too many requests.”
