The focus of climate change policy has been on slowing or halting change, while the second aspect – adaptation – has been largely ignored.
This is the subject of a new policy concept paper, “Climate Change in Canadian Agriculture: Background and Evidence Shows Policy Should Refocus on Adaptation,” written by Al Massel of Agri-Food Economic Systems.
Massell says agriculture is expected to do its best to mitigate climate change, but there has been little discussion or time to quantify the potential impacts of climate change on agriculture.
That’s a problem, he says, because food production needs to be thought about not just in domestic terms, but globally: Globally, food shortages remain a concern, but how will Canadian agriculture adapt to climate change?
In this discussion with RealAg Radio host Sean Haney, Massell explains how Canada can support adaptation in agriculture and why it’s so important.
