Wards Auto has released its mini vehicle sales forecast for May. Cyberattacks cause drop in U.S. light vehicle sales in June (Paid site)
Initial estimates suggest that the cyberattacks reduced auto industry sales by 50,000 units in June, down 600,000 units from the seasonally adjusted annualized sales of 15.3 million units for the same month. The disruptions caused quarterly sales to decline year-over-year for the first time since the third quarter of 2022, with deliveries of 4.075 million units down 0.4% compared to April-June 2023. SAAR for the second quarter was 15.7 million units, in line with the same period last year but higher than the 15.3 million units in the first quarter.
This chart shows light vehicle sales since 2006 according to BEA (blue) and Wards Auto June estimates (red).
Sales in June (15.29 million units based on SAAR) were down 3.8% compared to May and down 4.8% compared to June 2023.
The second chart shows light vehicle sales since 1967, when BEA began collecting data. June sales fell short of consensus expectations.
It should recover somewhat from the cyberattack of July.
