When Dave Van Bell hears the word “sustainability,” two things first come to mind: environmental sustainability and economic sustainability.
The two go hand in hand, says the president of Van Belle Nursery, a family-owned wholesale nursery located just north of Abbotsford, B.C. Over the past 50 years, the operation has grown from a modest landscaping supply farm to 100 acres with state-of-the-art greenhouses, container fields, raised bench yards, shipping bays and gardens that produce thousands of varieties of flowering shrubs, perennials, annuals, evergreens and ornamentals.
In this episode Profitable PracticeVan Bell talks about how he applies his vision of sustainability to drive operational efficiencies and secure the nursery’s future. “If what we do doesn’t bring economic benefits in the long term, we don’t know if it’s truly sustainable,” he says. “To be environmentally sustainable, it has to be economically sustainable as well.”
Lean efficiency practices, water management and electric vehicles are just some of the investments that make Van Belle Nursery more efficient, profitable and sustainable. Check out the video below:
