Oaga Art Resort, an idyllic haven in the Maldives known for its blend of luxury and local art, has announced its second Veyoge Gallery Villa Exhibition. Curated by Suvãsthi Gallery (Suvāsthi, /noun/: an expression of happiness), the resort will host its second exhibition, showcasing over 150 captivating pieces by 31 local Maldivian artists.
This year’s exhibition will feature three distinct themes – Dreams, Intimate Reflection and Sacred Realms. Each theme will be brought to life in five different Veyoge Gallery Pool Villas with ten captivating artworks adorning the walls of each villa. These themes reflect the essence of Veyoge Gallery Pool Villas, which is inspired by the ancient Maldivian folktale of Khalid and Siti, fateful lovers who embody dreams, introspection and connection to the sacred.
“This year’s open call was highly successful, with over 40 artists applying. Unlike our debut exhibition, this year’s open call focused on artists submitting with a specially curated theme,” says Nadee, Curator at Svasti Gallery. “What is most exciting about this exhibition is the inclusion of artists exhibiting their work for the first time. The majority of the participating artists are emerging talents under the age of 25, demonstrating exceptional creativity and potential. Our main aim in relaunching the Veyoge Gallery Villa exhibition every year is to have an inclusive selection of both emerging and established artists. This exhibition highlights the vibrant energy of the next generation of artists.”
A stay at Veyoge Gallery Pool Villas transcends a typical Maldivian resort holiday as guests are surrounded by local artwork, able to touch and even purchase these on-site, bringing a precious piece of Maldivian creativity back home with them.
The resort’s commitment to the local art scene extends beyond the exhibit’s walls: for every piece of art displayed and every night spent at Veyoge Gallery Villa, a donation is made to each exhibiting artist.
Inspired by the Maldives’ rich history as a thriving maritime kingdom, Svasti Gallery serves as a platform for Maldivian artists to share their stories and perspectives. The gallery’s retail store complements the exhibitions, offering a treasure trove of unique souvenirs and locally crafted gemstones. From traditional Maldivian handicrafts to contemporary jewellery and clothing, Svasti offers the perfect opportunity to find a piece of Maldivian art you’ll want to cherish long after your stay.
Suvāsthi Gallery is a place to do more than just appreciate art, but also to inspire your inner artist. The gallery hosts ‘free flow’ sessions where you can explore different mediums and artistic styles under the guidance of resident creatives and visiting artists.
Oaga Art Resort further fosters artistic connections by regularly inviting local artists to the island for a residency, creating a vibrant artistic exchange that enriches guests’ experience. Located in North Male Atoll, Oaga Art Resort is a 45-minute speedboat ride from Male International Airport. A small island with 60 villas with beach and overwater options, five restaurants and a spa inspired by traditional Maldivian healing practices, Oaga Art Resort’s artistic and creative space offers immersive experiences curated by local and visiting artists and Maldivian artisans.
