An iconic Cardiff hotel which has welcomed more than 1.5 million guests is celebrating its 25th anniversary.Number anniversary.
Located in the heart of Cardiff Bay, voco St David’s Cardiff is a five-star hotel & spa, one of the Welsh capital’s few iconic landmarks which will celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2024.
Opened in 1999 by Rocco Forte Hotels, St. David’s was the first five-star hotel in Wales. The hotel opened in a landmark year for Wales (also known as the Year of Cool Cymru): the first Welsh Assembly in over 600 years opened in Cardiff Bay, the Cardiff Bay Breakwater was completed, and the Millennium Stadium (now the Principality Stadium) opened, hosting 3 billion spectators from around the world for the Rugby World Cup.
Over the past 25 years, the award-winning hotel, renowned for its service, distinctive architecture and unparalleled views over Cardiff Bay, has solidified its position as Wales’ leading accommodation and a premier destination for dining, spa, meetings and events.
The 142-room hotel has welcomed 1,628,354 guests, including numerous celebrities and athletes, and hosted over 800 weddings.
In 2018, the hotel was acquired by InterContinental Hotels (IHG) and rebranded under the company’s new luxury brand, voco. voco St. David Cardiff is the second hotel worldwide and the first in Europe to open under the new voco brand. The voco brand has become IHG’s fastest growing premium brand.
Thanks to the owners’ investment, the hotel’s restaurant, bar and outdoor terrace have undergone an extensive refurbishment and reopened as Tir a Môr in 2021. Meaning land and sea in Welsh, the restaurant is inspired by its bayside location and serves the best of Wales’ produce.
Earlier this year, the hotel unveiled its new Tiger Bay Floor following an extensive £650,000 refurbishment. Taking inspiration from Tiger Bay’s rich cultural heritage, the refurbished rooms, junior suites and suites located on the hotel’s top floors represent the first phase of a major guestroom renovation project, with all floors due to be completed by 2026.
The refurbishment is part of a wider multi-million pound investment programme which has so far included a £300,000 upgrade to the spa and a £190,000 upgrade to the meetings, events and gym facilities.
