Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) and Haa Alif Ullgane Island Council have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to provide maritime services in Ullgane.
The MoU was signed by MPL CEO Mohamed Wajee and Chairman of the Ouligane Council Ahmed Muaz Mohamed at a ceremony held at the Ouligane Council on Thursday morning.
MPL said in a press release that development of the yacht marina in Ouligane is expected to begin this year and be completed within six months. The concept for the yacht marina has already been developed and discussions are currently underway with investors.
Commenting on the agreement, Wajee noted that the initiative fulfills President Mohamed Muiz’s promise to expand the Maldives’ maritime sector. He stressed that Uligan has historically been a more frequent port of call for yachts than other islands, but local residents and parliament are concerned about the lack of adequate services for these vessels.
Wajee stressed that the effort to establish a yacht marina in Uligan is in line with the President’s vision, and noted that the construction of an international banking and maritime services office in Ihavandippolhu atoll is progressing at a rapid pace.
MPL will provide office space to Customs, MNDF, Immigration and Port Health Department to commence port services. The office spaces are expected to be completed by the 10th of this month after which the recruitment process will begin.
