The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, located in Baa Atoll, the Maldives’ first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, has announced the completion of a new solar power project that will save energy and minimize environmental impact.
The resort enjoys a tropical climate all year round and to take advantage of this they have launched a solar panel project which will reduce annual diesel use by 135,000 litres and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 361,800kg, the equivalent of planting 16,400 trees.
The 650 new solar panels, tucked away in the heart of the island, will produce approximately six hours of energy each day, saving the resort more than US$135,000 by switching to this renewable energy source.
The project represents The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. Food waste is managed by a food composting machine, with the by-products used in the resort’s gardens, and an innovative bottle crusher recycles broken bottles and glasses, turning them into bases for villa umbrellas.
Vijay Kumar, general manager of The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort, commented: “As an island resort, sustainability is important to us and we are committed to creating solutions that minimise our impact on this beautiful ecosystem. The new panels will help us utilise the Maldives’ abundant sunlight and reduce our reliance on energy sources such as diesel.”
