The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort has announced an exclusive opportunity for Marriott Bonvoy members to bid on a freediving adventure with legendary 12-time world record holder Christian Redl. This exclusive experience, organized by Marriott Bonvoy Moments, offers a transformative journey into the heart of Baa Atoll, the Maldives’ first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In addition to immersively exploring the vibrant underwater landscape, the collaboration also aims to enhance marine conservation efforts by working with the local community of Maalos island to foster a deeper connection between guests and the marine world.
Renowned for his extraordinary achievements in freediving, Christian Redl has spent more than 30 years testing the limits of human endurance in the world’s harshest environments, on ice and under caves. His impressive list of achievements includes 12 world records, the latest of which is the longest 24-hour underwater cycling event, officially recognised by the German Record Institute (RID).
From 25 to 28 October 2024, the successful bidder will enjoy a personalized three-night stay for two guests in the resort’s spacious overwater pool villa, offering breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean. The experience includes a private freediving session with Christian Redl, offering a rare opportunity to learn from one of the world’s most renowned freedivers. The experience will be enhanced with a delicious dinner at the resort’s renowned Japanese restaurant, The Pearl. Guests will also have the exclusive privilege of dining with Redl.
The package encompasses Westin’s signature wellness programming and is designed to ensure guests’ overall wellbeing, allowing them to eat, sleep, move, feel and play well. The package includes a rejuvenating 60-minute spa treatment for two at Westin’s Heavenly Spa and a choice of sunrise or sunset yoga sessions in a tranquil setting. Guests can take their fitness to the next level with the resort’s signature runWESTIN program and 24/7 WestinWorkout fitness studio. Guests can borrow Hyperice, a recharge and recover wellness gear to ease muscle stiffness and tension after a long day of travel or activity, and lighten the load with Westin Hotels & Resorts’ Gear Lending program. This, combined with restorative sleep in the award-winning Heavenly Bed and soothing Sleep Well Lavender Balm, creates the perfect balance of movement and rejuvenation.
Founder of the non-profit organisation 7Oceans, Redl has led efforts to tackle critical marine issues including coral bleaching, overfishing, ghost nets, deep sea exploration, shipwrecks, shark finning and pollution from plastic waste. In line with Redl’s commitment to marine conservation, the collaboration extends beyond the resort to the neighbouring community of Maalos Island, known for its impressive underwater biodiversity. Redl will lead plastic pollution awareness sessions for Maalos residents and students, collaborate with the Maldives Freediving Association to provide psychological diving training and offer the winner of the bid an opportunity to take part in these impactful activities. The initiative aims to strengthen local marine connections and conservation efforts whilst also enabling Maldivian freedivers to explore the captivating underwater beauty of Baa Atoll.
“We are incredibly proud to partner with Christian Redl on this inspiring Marriott Bonvoy Moments,” said Vijay Kumar, general manager of The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort. “This collaboration reflects our commitment to providing our guests with unique and meaningful experiences that create lasting memories. We are honored to offer our guests the opportunity to contribute to ocean conservation and learn from one of the world’s most inspiring freedivers.”
Christian Redl commented, “Freediving is more than just a sport – it’s about building a deep connection with the ocean and sharing that bond with others. We are thrilled to partner with The Westin Maldives Miriandhoo Resort and look forward to raising awareness for marine conservation in our beautiful Baa Atoll.”
