For easy reference, here are some steps we recommend taking after the storm has passed.
First and foremost, make sure your loved ones are safe.
- Let your family, friends and others know that you are OK.
- If cell phone service is congested, try texting or email. Also consider posting your situation on social media or registering on the American Red Cross Safe and Well website.
- Follow evacuation orders and seek temporary shelter or seek refuge with family or friends who are not affected by the disaster.
- Save your phone’s battery life by lowering screen brightness, turning off Wi-Fi, and closing non-essential apps.
Do not enter a home unless you are sure it is safe.
- There may be exposed electrical wires, standing water, natural gas leaks, etc. If you’re concerned it may not be safe, don’t go there.
- Once it is safe to return to your home, consider your losses. Separate damaged and undamaged personal possessions. If it is unsafe to keep damaged items, take photos of them and dispose of them properly for adjusters to review as part of your claim.
- Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage. If necessary, hire a qualified repair service or contractor to make temporary repairs to prevent further loss. Be sure to keep any invoices or receipts and give them to our claims team to consider as part of your claim. Take sufficient photographs before making any repairs.
- Your home may be deemed uninhabitable because you don’t have running water or your overall safety is at risk, so check with your claims team to see if additional living expenses are covered.
- Save all receipts to document any increased expenses incurred while your home was uninhabitable and give them to the claims team to consider as part of your claim.
Please begin the claims process as soon as possible.
