Northbrook, Illinois, September 17, 2024 – 2024 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team® The field of candidates for this year’s Allstate Wuerffel Trophy has been narrowed down.
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team selected 22 student-athletes and one head coach who have performed exemplary community service, and the Allstate Wurfel Trophy will be announced later this year and awarded to one of 11 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players selected to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
“Each year I am inspired by the way young people use their talents to make a positive impact in their communities,” said two-time All-American, Heisman Trophy winner, 2009 Good Works Team member and 2008 All-State Wuerfel Award winner Tim Tebow. “Once again, I am honored to be a part of recognizing this award and the great work it represents.”
This year’s All-State AFCA Good Deeds Team was selected from a record 178 nominees representing collegiate players and coaches from across the nation in recognition of their unwavering commitment to community service and “good deeds” off the field.
This year’s team members are:
Chase Griffin, quarterback, UCLA: Griffin started a foundation to address food insecurity among youth and has raised tens of thousands of dollars for the Los Angeles Area Food Bank.
Malachi Starks, defensive back, University of Georgia: Starks runs football camps for at-risk youth in Atlanta and regularly visits Clark County schools.
Garrett Green, West Virginia quarterback: Green actively gives back to the community by visiting children at local hospitals, raising money for cancer patients and helping military veterans.
Washington State kicker Dean Janikowski: In memory of his late mother, Janikowski is raising money to support cancer patients, asking fans to pledge a donation every time they make a field goal or extra point.

“The Allstate AFCA Good Deeds Team represents the power of making things happen for our communities,” said Sam Acho, ESPN analyst, author, 2010 Good Deeds Team member and Allstate Wurfel Trophy recipient. “The recipients have accomplished so much in a short amount of time, and we hope this award encourages them to continue to realize the joy of serving others.”
The 23 award recipients are:
- 11 NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) players
- 11 players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), Division II, III and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NAIA)
- 1 Honorary Director
“The Good Works team embodies Allstate’s commitment to improving our communities,” said Troy Hawks, executive vice president and general manager of Allstate. “We are inspired by these honorees and the positive impact they are making for so many people.”
All members are selected by a voting committee made up of former All-State AFCA Good Works Team members, current and former head coaches and journalists who seek out exceptional leadership on and off the football field.
“It’s great to see the extra effort and community service these 22 young men put in every day,” said AFCA Executive Director Craig Ball. “Not to be outdone, Head Coach Emeritus Marcus Freeman shows that even being the head coach of an FBS program like Notre Dame means you can still give back and help your community. We congratulate Coach Freeman and these 22 student-athletes on being selected to the 2024 All-State AFCA Good Works Team.”

All-State Wuerfel Trophy winner and captain of the All-State AFCA Good Works Team
The Allstate Wuerffel Trophy is college football’s highest community service award and is presented to the 11 FBS players selected to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team who best combines leadership, performance and exemplary community service on and off the field. Named for Heisman Trophy winner and College Football Hall of Famer Danny Wuerffel, the award recognizes the former NFL quarterback’s efforts to inspire greater service and unity in the world.
“It’s been truly inspiring to see the incredible efforts of the Allstate AFCA Good Works team, giving back to their communities through hundreds of volunteer hours, establishing a non-profit foundation and hosting fundraising events,” Wurfel said. “I can’t wait to see which of these incredible service leaders will be selected this year as the 20th anniversary recipient of the Allstate Wurfel Trophy.”
The 2024 Allstate Wurffel Trophy finalists and winner will be selected by a national voting committee that includes fan voting. The 2024 winner, who will also be recognized as a captain of the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, will be announced live during the Home Depot College Football Awards Show, broadcast on ESPN on Dec. 12.

About the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team
The Allstate AFCA Good Works Team was established by the College Football Association in 1992 to recognize the special efforts made by college football players and student support staff off the field. AFCA became the governing body for the award in 1997 and continues to honor college football players who go the extra mile to help those in need. Allstate has been presenting the award since the 2008 season.
The Southeastern Conference (SEC) leads all conferences with 89 players selected to the All-State AFCA Good Works Team since its inception in 1992. The SEC is followed by the Atlantic Coast Conference with 55 and the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with 43. Georgia leads the All-State AFCA Good Works Team with 24 players selected. Following the Bulldogs are Kentucky and Bethel (Minn.) with 18 each. Super Bowl XLII, XLVI and XLI winning quarterbacks Eli and Peyton Manning were members of the All-State AFCA Good Works Team in 2002 and 1997, respectively.
