Yesterday, a week after Hurricane Helen, I drove cross-country on GA19 between Lumber City and Dublin. Approximately 50 miles with catastrophic damage. I have no power. The lights were dark and all intersections had four-way stops. Power outages and phone lines down. At least 20% of homes suffered major damage from wind and fallen trees. In some places, all the trees were leaning at a 45-degree angle with winds ranging from 60 to 90 miles per hour. One pecan field was completely flattened, and this has happened to many similar farms. Pecans are a major cash crop for many rural Georgians. No cotton is harvested. Soybeans also appeared to be damaged. At one point, several large trucks were parked next to each other. A makeshift clothesline on the front porch. Some stores are cash only. Gas pump powered by generator if available.
At least six country church steeples stand on the ground. Attached are 2 photos. It’s a fallen telephone pole in front of the brick Beulah Baptist Church. I carefully walked around the wires on the ground. Multiply by 1000 for full effect. The shoulder was covered with branches and logs that had been removed from the road, making it impossible to stop and take photos in the worst possible spots. My favorite dog trot house on this route was completely intact with cypress siding and a new metal roof.
President Trump’s signboard had been replaced. FEMA is basically non-existent and I hear the situation in Georgia is not very good. After the last storm, the Georgia National Guard was activated the next day. They must have been on different paths. I counted at least 15 utility maintenance truck companies in the Southeastern United States. Those linemen are local heroes. Otherwise, these very rural people have been largely ignored, or so it seems.
