For the week ending October 5th, Seasonally adjusted preliminary initial claims figure was 258,000This was an increase of 33,000 cases from the previous week’s pre-revised level of 225,000 cases. This is the highest number of first-time applications since August 5, 2023, when the number was 258,000. The four-week moving average was 231,000, an increase of 6,750 from the previous week’s unrevised average of 224,250.

Weekly filings exceeded consensus expectations.
This week’s increase is partially related to the hurricanes, such as in North Carolina, where first-time claims jumped from 2,941 the week before to 11,475 in the week ending Oct. 5.
