On a monthly basis, retail sales increased by 0.4% (seasonally adjusted) from August to September, and sales increased by 1.7% from September 2023.
From the Census Bureau report:
The preliminary estimate for September 2024 U.S. retail and food service sales was $714.4 billion, adjusting for seasonal variations and differences between holidays and business days, and excluding price changes. 0.4% increase from previous monthan increase of 1.7 percent from September 2023. … The percentage change from July 2024 to August 2024 was unchanged from a 0.1 percentage point increase.

This graph shows retail sales since 1992. This is seasonally adjusted monthly retail sales and food services (totals and excluding gasoline).
Retail sales excluding gasoline rose 0.6% in August.
The second graph shows the year-over-year change in retail sales and food services (excluding gasoline) since 1993.
Retail and food service sales excluding gasoline increased 2.9% year over year.
The change in sales in September was higher than expected, and combined sales for July and August were revised upward.
