The importance of “green spaces” for mental health is a well-known phenomenon, but recent studies have revealed just how influential blue spaces are. The pan-European research initiative “Blue Health” began investigating the impact of “blue spaces” on health from 2016 to 2020. The results showed that “increased exposure to blue spaces improves mental health, well-being and physical activity” (Dr. Mireia Gascón). What’s even more interesting is that blue spaces are superior to green due to the unique psychological restorative effects of water.
In the UK, surfing therapy is an established form of therapeutic support accepted by the NHS and prescribed by doctors to children. Spending time in nature, particularly in ‘blue spaces’, has been proven to reduce the production of stress hormones, cortisol and epinephrine. This, combined with the benefits of physical activity and the satisfaction of learning a new skill, makes surfing an unconventional and exciting new form of therapy.
Kuda Villingili has teamed up with UK-based charity The Wave Project to bring surf therapy to some of the most beautiful blue waters in the world, the Maldives. The Wave Project aims to transform young lives by demonstrating over the years that getting in the ocean, surfing and having fun in the water can make a measurable difference to their health and wellbeing. This summer, The Wave Project will be hosting thrilling surfing retreats during resort stays.
The Maldives is renowned for its crystal clear waters and pure white beaches, but its potential as a surfing hotspot is often overlooked. In fact, Kuda Villingili is one of the best-located resorts in the Maldives for surfers. Just minutes from the famous Chicken’s Break, the long, lively left wave produces swells ranging from 3 to over 10 feet and offers rideable waves up to 500 metres long.
Soul Searching in Kuda Villingili at Chickens Retreat will explore how these “blue spaces” can impact young people’s mental health and wellbeing, focusing on outdoor activities exploring the beauty and nature that the Maldives is famous for. With a focus on mindfulness and breathwork, and exhilarating excursions from surfing and paddle boarding to yoga and meditation, the journey will allow guests to experience the wonder of the water and truly immerse themselves in these idyllic blue spaces.
Soul Searching at Chickens runs from July 26 to August 26. See the Soul Searching at Chickens brochure. Soul Searching with Chicken – Surf Retreat To book a retreat please email reservations@kudavillingili.com.
