Since 2015, Velassaru Maldives has been holding an annual raffle, open only to long-time Muslim employees, with the prize being a trip to the holy city of Mecca in Saudi Arabia.
The draw is exclusive to Muslim Maldivian team members who have served for five consecutive years, and the sponsorship will support the winner every step of their pilgrimage journey.
“Almost 50% of our employees are Maldivian and Muslim. Having one of our valued team members participate in the annual Hajj pilgrimage is a top priority for us. We believe that a motivated team is vital to both productivity and employee satisfaction, and it is our goal to provide our team members with opportunities for professional and personal growth,” said General Manager Denis Khordienko.
Muslims around the world are encouraged to make the holy journey at least once in their lifetime, but with the pilgrimage costing an average of $6,000, many cannot afford to take part.

The Islamic ritual is one of the five pillars of Islam and a 14,400-year-old tradition. More than two million pilgrims are expected to perform the ritual in Mecca next year, with Velassaru Maldives’ lucky lottery winner, Captain Abdulla Arshad, among the enthusiastic Hajj pilgrims.
The Hajj raffle draw took place at the resort’s annual awards staff party on 26 July 2024, which also marked Velassaru Maldives’ 15th anniversary and was attended by General Manager Dennis Khordienko who conducted the draw.
