Patina Maldives, Fari Island has unveiled its latest artistic collaboration, “Life Energy,” a series of “living paintings” by renowned French-Iranian contemporary artist Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar. Conceived and launched at the resort’s Fari Art Atelier earlier this year, the art series returned to its source of inspiration in July, unfolding through special events, exhibitions and art sales celebrating the intersection of art, nature and sustainability.
Distinguished guests, including Sir Mo Farah, rapper and singer Little Simz, and actress Kaya Scodelario, gathered at the resort’s Portico Library to watch the official unveiling of “Life,” a large-scale, site-specific work created in Sassin’s Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat atelier shortly after his return from his first visit to the island. Expressing the language of energy and nature and referencing the good life, the work was created primarily using natural pigments such as minerals, wood, roots, flowers, rocks, earth, recycled pigments, and washed-up shells and coral collected from across the island. By ensuring that the wood and linen used for his canvases were sustainably sourced and naturally treated, Sassin has pioneered the harmony between traditional artistic practices and nature, making him a pioneer in the contemporary art world.
This latest addition to Patina Maldives’ permanent art collection joins works by renowned artists such as James Turrell, Jose Davila, Casio Vasconcelos, Hongjie Yang, Hiroko Takeda and FAHR 021.3.
An exhibition of Sassan’s miniature “Living Paintings” series has opened, with ten pieces now available for individual purchase. Inspired by the traditional use of natural pigments and a commitment to sustainable creation, the collection consists of 20cm x 20cm paintings of mixed media, groundwashed shells and coral on linen. The names of the paintings celebrate a deep connection to nature, the energy of the islands and a conscious way of living. From “Energy in Nature” and “Garden of Life” to “Soleil Couchant” and “Essence of Life”, the paintings convey a sense of serenity, inspire intention and promote a kinder, more meaningful way of living. Delving into themes of eco-consciousness and sustainability, the series offers a fascinating exploration that invites contemplation.
The “Life Energy” event culminated in a fascinating panel discussion at Fari Art Atelier, moderated by Susie Sikorski of Christie’s Middle East. Speakers including Antonio Saponara, General Manager of Patina Maldives, art collectors and patrons joined Sassan to delve deeper into the artist’s creative process, his inspiration from the natural world and his dedication to sustainable art practices. The series will also be exhibited at a private gathering in London later this year.
“Life energy is the secret to human health. Only by feeling the energy can we understand the connection between mind and body and the importance of living in harmony with nature. When I paint using only natural and sustainable materials taken from the earth, my soul feels truly alive and connected. As someone living in a modern, yet destructive world, we cannot hope to create a sustainable culture for future generations unless we change our approach. Without this necessary change, we will continue to destabilize the earth systems we rely on as humans. The damage to our blue home reflects that of our society. As a creative human being, it is my duty today to promote through my work the understanding that humanity, nature and progress should and can coexist,” said Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar.
“Life Energy” marks the third major chapter of Pathways, Patina Maldives’ prominent event series designed to inspire lasting personal transformation. A visionary artist known for his innovative approach to contemporary art, Sassan Behnam Bakhtiar’s work often explores the symbiotic relationship between humans and nature, emphasizing the importance of sustainability and harmony with nature. Sassan’s art has been exhibited around the world and is highly acclaimed for its profound impact and environmental consciousness.
