Aitkin Spence Hotels has a proud 50 years of excellence in the hospitality industry. Since opening the Neptune Hotel in 1974, the company has grown into a global leader known for its commitment to sustainability, quality and innovation. Over the decades, Aitkin Spence has expanded its international footprint beyond Sri Lanka, setting new standards in the Maldives, Oman and India, making it the only hotel chain of Sri Lankan origin with such widespread reach.
Starting with the Neptune Hotel, named after the Roman god of the sea, Aitken Spence made history in 1994 as the first Sri Lankan hospitality company to invest overseas with the acquisition of Bathala Island Resort in the Maldives. This pioneering spirit continued when the company expanded into Oman in 2008. In 2016, Turya Chennai opened in India, followed by a successful collaboration with RIU Hotels Spain in 2017. These innovative efforts have stood the test of time, cementing Aitken Spence’s position as a pioneer in the industry.
Aitken Spence Hotels currently operates 18 hotels with a total of 2,629 rooms across Sri Lanka, Maldives, Oman and India. Its flagship brand, Heritance Hotels & Resorts, is known for its architectural excellence, with three hotels designed by legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa. Notably, Heritance Kandalama was the first LEED certified hotel outside the United States and the first Green Globe certified hotel in South Asia. The hotel reflects Aitken Spence’s innovative approach to blending design, nature and sustainability, making it one of the most awarded hotels in the world.
Sustainability is the foundation of Aitkin Spence’s business. From managing 211 acres of protected forest at Heritance Kandalama that support rich biodiversity to eliminating single-use plastics at all resorts in the Maldives, the company has consistently demonstrated its commitment to environmental responsibility. These efforts are industry benchmarks and underscore Aitkin Spence’s leadership in sustainability. Additionally, the company’s commitment to talent development is evident through its Heritance Kandalama and Heritance Ahungalla Hotel Schools, preparing future hospitality professionals for success.
As Aitkin Spence Hotels reflects on its 50-year journey, the milestone inspires employees and inspires a renewed focus on the future of hospitality. “Reaching this milestone is a moment of pride and reflection,” said Stashani Jayawardena, vice chairman and managing director, Aitkin Spence Hotel Holdings PLC. “It celebrates our achievements and reaffirms our commitment to innovation, sustainability and community impact.
