Kuramathi Maldives has announced the appointment of Tom Osborne as its new Sustainability Manager.
In this role, Osborne will lead the resort’s sustainability initiatives and act as the driving force behind environmental stewardship efforts. His responsibilities include ensuring compliance with Travelife standards, working with the engineering team to optimise energy use and managing major projects such as a new coral regeneration programme on the house reef and the construction of a new facility for the Maldives Coral Institute. Osborne’s role will be crucial in integrating large and small scale sustainability measures to enhance the resort’s environmental impact.
Growing up in the quiet countryside of Cornwall, Osborne developed a deep connection with nature from an early age. This passion led him to pursue a career in marine biology, where he aimed to combine his love of the ocean with his work. In his spare time, Osborne enjoys diving and surfing.
Osborne has been in the role for four months and brings a wealth of experience and a passion for sustainability. Prior to joining Kuramathi Maldives, he worked for prominent organizations in Costa Rica, Saudi Arabia and Kenya where he gained valuable insights into marine conservation. He holds a BSc and MSc in Marine Biology from Swansea University in Wales, where his research focused on green sea turtle larvae. This strong academic background enables him to address broader sustainability challenges and lead impactful environmental programs at the resort.
At Kuramathi, Osborne has led efforts to reduce staff food waste and minimise the use of single-use plastics by introducing reusable bottles. His commitment to sustainability is reflected in his keenness to stay informed of the latest trends and practices in the field. Guided by the principle that “we did not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children”, Osborne is determined to make a lasting positive impact on both the resort and the wider environment.
