On a monthly basis, retail sales increased by 0.4% from September to October (seasonally adjusted) and by 2.8% from October 2023.
From the Census Bureau report:
The preliminary estimate for October 2024 U.S. retail and food service sales was $718.9 billion, adjusting for seasonal variations and differences between holidays and business days, and excluding price changes. 0.4% increase from previous month… The rate of change from August 2024 to September 2024 has been revised from an increase of 0.4% to an increase of 0.8%.

This graph shows retail sales since 1992. This is seasonally adjusted monthly retail sales and food services (totals and excluding gasoline).
Retail sales excluding gasoline rose 0.4% in October.
The second graph shows the year-over-year change in retail sales and food services (excluding gasoline) since 1993.
Retail and food service sales excluding gasoline increased 3.5% year over year.
The change in sales in October exceeded expectations, and sales for August and September combined were revised upward.
