The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO) has announced the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). This strategic partnership aims to strengthen tourism cooperation between the Maldives and India, facilitating closer collaboration and mutual growth in the travel industry.
This agreement marks an important milestone in promoting tourism between the two countries. By leveraging the strengths and networks of both MATATO and IATO, the partnership aims to create more opportunities for travel and cultural exchange. The main objectives of this MOU are to:
- Promoting bilateral tourism through joint marketing activities
- Sharing best practices to improve service standards and operational efficiency
- Organizing joint events, roadshows and fairs to highlight travel opportunities
- Promoting sustainable tourism practices that benefit both countries
Following the signing of the MOU, MATATO held a fruitful follow-up meeting with the Indian High Commissioner to the Maldives, His Excellency Munu Mahawar. The meeting was a continuation of the discussions held on 9 April 2024, which focused on strengthening tourism ties between the two countries.
An upcoming major event will be a roadshow organized to showcase Maldives tourism to the Indian market. The roadshow, which will take place in Mumbai, New Delhi and Bangalore – the three cities with the most air links to the Maldives – is aimed at strengthening tourism ties. The importance of the roadshow was highlighted during the discussions and it was agreed that:
- Further strengthening cooperation in the tourism sector
- Detailed planning to ensure maximum effectiveness
- Promoting cultural exchange to deepen mutual understanding and appreciation
- Secure support from stakeholders such as airlines, hotels, travel agents etc. to ensure the success of the roadshow
