I first encountered Rangel Bookbinder in my hometown. Chiptune I met him recently at an event in the Ann Arbor area where he was kind enough to drop off my copy. Homemade low-fi NES shooting game GunTneR I don’t know what goes on in Rangel’s mind, but he always comes up with some crazy project, and it’s always amazing, so of course when I heard about his new work I was intrigued. Bleeper.
The Bleepler is a handheld synthesizer toy that you can build yourself, or you can get it ready to use with no soldering required. Deceptively simple, the instrument consists of a single mechanical keyboard key and a potentiometer that combine to produce a sound known as a “bleepler” through the onboard speaker. In reality, this simplicity is not so misleading: a button controls the flow of power from the battery, and a knob controls the pitch. Here’s what it looks like:
