a German court handed down judgment The robots at the Tegut supermarket chain must be given Sundays off just like human workers. Under German law, retail stores must be closed on Sundays and Christian holidays to give employees a day of rest. Tegut circumvents this law by fully automating its stores, earning 25% to 30% of Sunday sales. The union representing the store’s employees filed a lawsuit to force the store to close on Sundays, saying the company’s success could undermine support for the country’s blue laws.

alex stapp pointing out Canada is the only NATO country that has a free trade agreement with the United States. If you think about it, that’s quite surprising. NATO allies are bound by commitments to mutual defense, support for military cooperation, and dedication to democratic principles. Despite these common commitments, the United States still enforces tariffs and quotas on NATO allies, including France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Denmark, Portugal, and Spain. It’s like getting married but not having a joint checking account. If they are good enough partners to be committed to their own defense, shouldn’t their NATO allies be good enough partners to be committed to free trade? (added in bold)

For years, American policymakers have justified their obsession with the Middle East by citing the importance of protecting Israel and importing oil. Traditional cataloging requires catalogers to describe books as objectively as possible. There are also specific guidelines that caution catalogers not to select subject headings (hyperlinked topic descriptors within records) based on their own values and beliefs. One of the first questions I was asked during my job interview was to see if I agreed with the catalog material, which I personally found offensive. After all, libraries, and by extension catalogers, are supposed to be the guardians of free speech and intellectual freedom. You don’t know who will be looking for the material and for what purpose, so you need to be fair, accurate, and objective to help find the material. However, the overriding duty of catalogers now appears to be to protect users from the harm that records (even materials!) may cause.
In the discussion mentioned above, fellow catalogers shamelessly stated that certain marginalized groups should be allowed to decide how books are labeled. If a cataloger who is a member of a marginalized group believes that the book in question is harmful or offensive, that cataloger has the right to add a note to the catalog stating his or her beliefs. There are enough. Therefore, four of his books are currently listed in the International Catalog (used in libraries around the world) with the label “transphobic works”. Several books criticizing current gender-affirming models of care carry thematic headings of “transphobia.” Since these books are not about transphobia, the subject headings will remind readers of record (and potentially libraries to choose which books to order) that these are “bad books” and should not be viewed. may be used as a way to alert a librarian). Nuclear power could be a game-changer for energy affordability, grid reliability, and carbon reduction. However, this problem has been suppressed for decades based on a seriously flawed scientific model: the Linear No Threshold (LNT) model. The theory underlying this model suggests that exposure to ionizing radiation, no matter how small, increases the risk of cancer, and that risk increases linearly with the level of exposure. That’s not true.
The roots of LNT’s dominance are more political than scientific. The effects go back to the beginning. Hermann Muller, geneticist and 1946 Nobel Prize winner. Mueller’s research in the 1920s and 1930s claimed to have shown that radiation induces mutations in fruit flies and that there is no safe threshold. He said that even if the radiation dose is small, genetic defect.
But it appears Mueller may have intentionally misled his supporters. For example, Muller falsely claimed in his 1946 Nobel Prize acceptance speech that:There’s no escape” From the conclusion that all radiation is harmful, despite evidence to the contrary.
