Once the pea plants sprout and begin to grow, it’s time to watch out for pea weevil damage. Adult pea weevils cause cuts in the pea leaves, but it is the damage caused by root-feeding larvae that causes economic loss to the pea crop.
Although pea leaf weevils are not a problem in all pulse-growing regions, they are a significant pest of pea crops in parts of Alberta and a growing area of Saskatchewan.
In this episode of Pulse School, Jay Byer, manager and agronomist at Gateway Research Organization, explains how to scout for weevils, the damage this pest causes, and what farmers can do to manage this pest.
