Seeding techniques have come a long way in a short period of time but the same general principles apply – spread seed at a uniform rate and to the desired depth while minimizing damage to the seed and maintaining good furrow closure and pressure while rolling over changing terrain.
Figuring out how to achieve all of these goals can be a daunting task, and each brand of seeding equipment approaches the goals from a slightly different angle.
Don Henry is CEO of SeedMaster Manufacturing and has played a key role in the evolution of seeding equipment and technology for decades.
Henry says the future will be all about adaptability – how quickly the planter can adjust to changing soil types and planting conditions, and then make any further adjustments needed, either automatically or at the touch of a button in the cab.
Henry says there’s room for more automation in the future, but sowing and planting isn’t a top priority for autonomy — there’s so much riding on that path.
