He said Canadian industry got a taste of what market access to South Korea would be like during the COVID-19 pandemic, when import duties were reduced to zero for food security reasons. He noted that Canadian shipments increased by 165% in that short period of time.
Finney acknowledged that the bilateral trade agreement signed by the Canadian government in 2014 remains in effect, with the CCA lowering import tariffs on par with the U.S. and leveling the playing field for exports to key markets in the Indo-Pacific. Having just returned from South Korea, Finney and other CCA members are repacking their belongings and heading to Hermosillo, Mexico, to attend the annual meeting of the National Federation of Ganaderas, which represents 800,000 ranchers across Mexico. He said the meeting in Mexico will include tripartite talks with the United States on voluntary country-of-origin labeling and a review of the upcoming North American trade agreement.
