Red Sun Farms, located in Kingsville, Ontario, is one of 170 greenhouse vegetable farms in Ontario.
The greenhouse vegetable industry across Ontario grows tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers in 3,900 acres of greenhouses, producing 521 million kilograms of fresh vegetables and more than $1.4 billion in farm value.
About this episode profitable practiceHost Bernard Tobin joins President Jim DiMenna on a tour of Red Sun Farms’ 27.5 acres of greenhouses near the southwestern tip of Ontario. He will discuss all aspects of greenhouses, from seed breeding to crop nutrition and pest control, and will share how the growing environment is controlled and managed for optimal vegetable production.
DiMenna also emphasizes the important role that technology and innovation play in Red Sun Farm’s sustainability and profitability. For example, in greenhouses, self-driving carts move crops around vast facilities, improving labor efficiency, improving safety, and increasing product competitiveness.
On the packaging line, DiMenna says automation plays a key role in streamlining the process from greenhouse to packaging. At each stage, technology transfers the product efficiently, minimizing the need for human intervention. “Looking around, you can see that the presence of human operators has been minimized among the numerous touchpoints within the packhouse. This integration of automation not only increases efficiency; Product integrity and consistency are maintained throughout the packaging process.” Watch the video below.
