Farm children are the next generation of farmers, and it is the responsibility of the current generation to keep them safe.
This week, from May 13 to 19, 2024, the first-ever Kids FarmSafe Week is being hosted by the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association (CASA) with sponsor BASF Canada.
CASA Director of Programs and Communications Robin Anderson says this week is all about encouraging farmers and the farming community to #KeepKidsFarmSafe by raising awareness about the health and safety risks to children and youth on farms. Told.
Between 1990 and 2020, 435 children and young people lost their lives in agriculture-related incidents. Anderson said the most common fatalities involving children on farms are in the youngest age group (4 years old and under), and most of them are caused by being hit by a car.
Mr Robinson said it was important for children to follow the example of their parents and grandparents who worked safely on farms, but that farmers could also introduce dangers to children who are new to the farm or who are not used to life on a farm. He says it is also important to communicate risks.
It’s also important to involve children in age-appropriate tasks that are mentally, emotionally and physically safe to perform, she says.
Everyone involved in the agricultural industry is encouraged to learn more about farm safety, especially as it relates to keeping the next generation of farmers safe, through the resources available at: www.kidsfarmsafe.ca.
