Once the soybeans emerge from the ground, the crop is very resilient. What’s more, soybeans have turned out to be more hardy than originally thought, and new research suggests they may yield better results if planted earlier than corn or canola.
In this episode, soybean schoolLaura Schmidt, production specialist with Manitoba Pulse & Soybean Growers, explains how soybeans are amazing even in challenging spring conditions. Even if they overcome scab, in cool soils or very dry conditions, soybeans can still achieve the highest yields if planted earlier than corn or canola. (Details below)
If producers want to proceed with early planting, at least two weeks after the area’s average last frost date, research shows that soybeans can provide the highest yields that can be planted throughout May. Masu.
“In some cases, planting in the second week of May may result in a slight increase in yield. However, if you begin to postpone sowing to the fourth week of May or later, you may actually increase the potential for yield reduction. You start to see the gender,” Schmidt says.
The risk of frost increases during the first week of May. Frost damage under the cotyledons or at the hook stage can kill the seedlings. A frost that early can reduce the population of a plant stand.
Seeding rate also plays an important role in achieving the ideal conditions of 140,000 to 160,000 live plants per acre.
“With a seeding rate of 150,000 to 190,000 seeds per acre, we are minimizing seed costs while maintaining yields. However, seeding soybeans earlier in some of these more severe conditions is “When we think about it, we want to establish a strong crop, and in some cases that puts soybeans in a more difficult scenario,” Schmidt says. “So in that case, we want to stay at the high end of the seeding rate range. We don’t see any benefit in increasing seeds above 190,000 seeds per acre in these scenarios, but we want to stay at the high end of the seeding rate range. I’d like to be in that range. ”
The study also investigated what factors contribute to the success or failure of early-planted crops, such as seed size, but temperature conditions had the biggest impact on sowing success.
