One of the most important things to learn about pests before managing them is to know their life cycle and assess the economic damage they can cause.
Jeremy Irvine, a master’s student at the University of Saskatchewan, is working on this important information about a rare pest: the brown weevil.
Primarily a pest of seed production in red clover, this small insect begins as a small larva-like insect and progresses through four instars to become an adult. Irvine said feeding damage can be severe enough to warrant pest control, but larvae are good at hiding, sometimes hiding inside plant stems. This creates a major challenge because chemical control options for clover leaf weevil work by contact.
