The Government of Canada has committed $9.6 million to help Canada’s pork industry prevent and prepare for a potential outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF).
ASF is a viral disease that only affects pigs. Although not previously found in Canada, it is widespread worldwide and poses a significant risk to the health of Canada’s pig herd, pork industry, and Canadian economy.
The funding will support 29 African Swine Fever Industry Preparedness Program (ASFIPP) projects in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island.
The project will include ASF research, improved biosecurity measures, feral pig management activities, renovation of existing slaughterhouses, regional preparation for welfare depopulation and healthy pig culling, sector analysis, engagement and educational tools. focuses on and helps ensure the safety of the department.
